Rhonda wanted to scald her lips. She felt like vomiting. “I’m going to demolish that little runt.”

“What is that?” Mr. Edwin Tulley asked. He stopped walking down a long hallway lined with large stained-glass windows and looked at the beautiful woman standing next to him. “What did you say, Ms. Knight?”

“Oh, I said…” Rhonda glanced down at the very expensive grayish-black tile floor that cost more money than she would ever see in a lifetime. “I said…I was admiring the beauty of this building.” Mr. Tulley reminded Rhonda of Robin Leach from the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. The man was wearing a crisp gray suit that cried of money. The suit matched his snotty face.

“This…building is a monstrosity,” Mr. Tulley scowled. “The original structure was built by a brilliant Russian architect in 1878.” Mr. Tulley looked at Rhonda. “The original structure had wood cut from the deepest German forest and stone cut from the cliffs of Norway. The…building…that stands now is a pathetic heap of junk.”

“Uh…well, it seems very nice.” Rhonda forced a fake smile to her face. “The tile floor is beautiful.”

“The tile is cheap junk from France.” Mr. Tulley glowered.

“Really?” Rhonda asked in a shocked voice. “It looks very expensive.”

“To a common peasant, yes,” Mr. Tulley explained in his snotty voice, “but to a man of my stature…no.”

Rhonda fought the urge to roll her eyes. Edwin Tulley was nearly as bad as Oscar Frost in her view. “Mr. Tulley, I’m not here to admire the handiwork. Ms. Capperson was infected with a serious virus. I need to interview each of her students. If I spot any of them exhibiting symptoms, I will send them into town to see Dr. Varnell right away…without panic, of course.”

Mr. Tulley made a sour face. “Ms. Capperson was a horrid woman,” he announced. “I would have gratefully terminated the woman and paid her unemployment and faced any lawsuit she might have brought against the academy, but certain parents seemed to favor the woman. Why? I have never been able to figure out that riddle.” Mr. Tulley lowered his voice. “I caught Ms. Capperson sneaking through private files on several occasions. When I replaced the lock on the file room door, I was informed by our computer team that certain violations had been conducted. Our computer team traced the violations to Ms. Capperson’s laptop.”

“Oh? Why didn’t you fire her? You surely had the grounds to do so.”

Mr. Tulley glanced around. “I was preparing to terminate the woman,” he confessed in an even lower voice. “I was preparing to contact the parents and inform them of Ms. Capperson’s violations. But then I received a call last night from Sheriff O’Neil. He informed me the horrid woman had killed herself.” Mr. Tulley looked at Rhonda with careful eyes. “Ms. Knight, I am an educator. I am not a stupid man.”

Rhonda studied Mr. Tulley’s eyes. “You mean you don’t believe Sheriff O’Neil?”

“I believe Ms. Capperson was murdered and I told Sheriff O’Neil that very thing,” Mr.
